Question about 7 Layer Dip? Is the taco seasoning supposed to mixed with the sour cream or the refried beans?

I've found recipes where the seasoning is either mixed in with the sour cream or mixed in with the refried beans or bother? Also, could you please list for me the 7 usual ingredients used in a classic 7 Layer Dip and the order by which they should be spread into the dish?Question about 7 Layer Dip? This is only one variation. I chose it because it explains to put the taco seasoning in with the beans.

There are no set recipes when it comes to this dip. I add black olives, diced tomatos etc....

Fantastic Seven Layer Dip

1 (16 ounce) can refried beans

1 (1 1/4 ounce) package regular taco seasoning mix

8 ounces sour cream (low-fat is okay)

8 ounces prepared guacamole (store-bought or home-made)

1 cup shredded four-cheese Mexican blend cheese or cheddar cheese (is fine)

1 cup mild salsa

1 (4 ounce) can diced green chilies

1/3 cup sliced green onions

16 ounces tortilla chips

In a small bowl, combine beans and the taco seasoning mix.

Spread the bean/taco mix evenly over the bottom of an 8-inch square serving dish.

Layer with the sour cream, then the guacamole, then the shredded cheese, then the salsa, then the chiles and last, the green onions.

Serve with lots of tortilla chips-- delicious!Question about 7 Layer Dip? Is the taco seasoning supposed to mixed with the sour cream or the refried beans?

Stir taco mix into refried beans....for more suggestions just go in on a search on recipes.com...good luck!
I mix mine in with the sour cream. Granted I have never used a recipe for this dip, except for Emeril's Seafood 7 layer which uses diced Jalapenos, diced gulf shrimp, diced black olives, cilantro and lime in one of the layers. The beauty of this dip as in cooking there is no set rules. Try it both ways and go with the way you think tastes better. Enjoy!

The way my family makes it is they put the seasoning with the sour cream. It makes it this sort of pink color. The usual ingredients are lettuce, tomato, cheese, refried beans, tortilla chips, and sour cream w/ taco seasoning.

The order is:

1. On the bottom spread refried beans

2. Cheese

3. Tomatoes

4. Sour cream w/ taco seasoning

5. Lettuce

6. Tortilla chips

7. I am not sure about the 7th ingredient...
I have seen it both way. But my recipe is:

1 can refried beans

1 package taco seasoning

8 ounces of sour cream

1 avocado

Grated cheddar cheese

1 chopped tomato, drained

1 can sliced black olives, drained

1 small can green chili peppers, drained

In a small saucepan, heat beans until smooth and stir in 1/2 package of taco seasoning.

In a small bowl, stir remaining 1/2 package of taco seasoning mix with sour cream.

On a serving platter, spread beans in a thick but even, layer to form a base for the mound. Refrigerate long enough for beans to stiffen. Spread avocado over beans. Spread sour cream over avocado. Layer chilies, cheese, olives and tomato over sour cream. Chill until ready to serve.
Blend the taco seasoning mix with the refried beans.
