I certainly prefer French vanilla ice cream with the beans in it. Higher in quality, flavour %26amp; price. I'm sure they can be used interchangeably and if I make a dessert with cake, pie, cookies or shakes I often use regular vanilla ice cream and the difference in flavours is rarely noticed because of the other flavours involved.
